4th Thursday after Trinity

1
This is the message we have heard from Christ:
that God is light, in whom there is
no darkness at all
1 John 1:5
Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of God's Herald
Go up to a high mountain
herald of good tiding to Zion:
lift up your voice with strength,
herald of good tidings to Jerusalem.

Lift up your voice, fear not:
say to the cities of Judah, 'Behold your God!'
See the Lord God, coming with power:
coming to rule with his mighty arm.
He brings his reward for the people of God:
the recompense for those who are saved.
God will feed his flock like a shepherd:
and gather the lambs in his arms;
He will hold them to his breast:
and gently lead those that are with young.
Isaiah 40:9-11
3 The Opening Prayer
The night has passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.
Silence may be kept
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and for ever. Amen.
4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each
1  Lord, you have been our refuge
   from one generation to another.
2  Before the mountains were brought forth,
      or the earth and the world were formed,
   from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
3  You turn us back to dust and say:
   ‘Turn back, O children of earth.’
4  For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday,
   which passes like a watch in the night.
5  You sweep them away like a dream;
   they fade away suddenly like the grass.
6  In the morning it is green and flourishes;
   in the evening it is dried up and withered.
7  For we consume away in your displeasure;
   we are afraid at your wrathful indignation.
8  You have set our misdeeds before you
   and our secret sins in the light of your countenance.
9  When you are angry, all our days are gone;
   our years come to an end like a sigh.
10  The days of our life are three score years and ten,
      or if our strength endures, even four score;
   yet the sum of them is but labour and sorrow,
      for they soon pass away and we are gone.
11  Who regards the power of your wrath
   and your indignation like those who fear you?
12  So teach us to number our days
   that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.
13  Turn again, O Lord; how long will you delay?
   Have compassion on your servants.
14  Satisfy us with your loving-kindness in the morning,
   that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
15  Give us gladness for the days you have afflicted us,
   and for the years in which we have seen adversity.
16  Show your servants your works,
   and let your glory be over their children.
17  May the gracious favour of the Lord our God be upon us;
   prosper our handiwork; O prosper the work of our hands.
1  It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord
   and to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
2  To tell of your love early in the morning
   and of your faithfulness in the night-time,
3  Upon the ten-stringed instrument, upon the harp,
   and to the melody of the lyre.
4  For you, Lord, have made me glad by your acts,
   and I sing aloud at the works of your hands.
5  O Lord, how glorious are your works!
   Your thoughts are very deep.
6  The senseless do not know,
   nor do fools understand,
7  That though the wicked sprout like grass
   and all the workers of iniquity flourish,
8  It is only to be destroyed for ever;
   but you, O Lord, shall be exalted for evermore.
9  For lo, your enemies, O Lord,
      lo, your enemies shall perish,
   and all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.
10  But my horn you have exalted
      like the horns of wild oxen;
   I am anointed with fresh oil.
11  My eyes will look down on my foes;
   my ears shall hear the ruin of the evildoers
      who rise up against me.
12  The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree,
   and shall spread abroad like a cedar of Lebanon.
13  Such as are planted in the house of the Lord
   shall flourish in the courts of our God.
14  They shall still bear fruit in old age;
   they shall be vigorous and in full leaf;
15  That they may show that the Lord is true;
   he is my rock,
      and there is no unrighteousness in him.
5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
Almighty God, who wonderfully created us in your own image and yet more wonderfully restored us in your Son Jesus Christ: grant that, as he came to share our human nature, so we may be partakers in his divine glory; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed

Judges 11:1–11 (Listen)

Jephthah Delivers Israel

11:1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior, but he was the son of a prostitute. Gilead was the father of Jephthah. And Gilead’s wife also bore him sons. And when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, “You shall not have an inheritance in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.” Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob, and worthless fellows collected around Jephthah and went out with him.

After a time the Ammonites made war against Israel. And when the Ammonites made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to bring Jephthah from the land of Tob. And they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our leader, that we may fight against the Ammonites.” But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Did you not hate me and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?” And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “That is why we have turned to you now, that you may go with us and fight against the Ammonites and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.” Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight against the Ammonites, and the LORD gives them over to me, I will be your head.” 10 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “The LORD will be witness between us, if we do not do as you say.” 11 So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and leader over them. And Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD at Mizpah.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side.1 The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house—28 for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”

7 The Canticle, The Hymn of the Word
In the beginning was the Word:
and the Word was with God,
And the Word was God:
He was in the beginning with God.
All things were made through him:
and without him, was not anything made that was made.
In him was life:
and the life was the light of all people.
The light shines in the darkness:
and the darkness has not overcome it.
He was in the world:
and the world was made through him
yet the world knew him not.

He came to his own home:
and his own people received him not.
But to all who received him who believed on his name:
he has given power to become children of God;
Who were born not of blood
nor of the will of the flesh:
nor of the will of a man but of God,
And the Word became flesh:
and dwelt among us full of grace and truth;
We have beheld his glory:
glory as of the only Son from the Father,
And from his fullness have we all received:
the grace upon grace.
John 1:1-5, 10-14, 16
8 The Apostles' Creed may be said
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.

    12 The Morning Collect
    Lord and heavenly Father,
    you have brought us safely to this new day:
    keep us by your mighty power, protect us from sin,
    guard us from every kind of danger,
    and in all we do this day

    And also with you.
    Let us praise the Lord.

    2 The Opening Canticle, A Song for Joy
    Be joyful in the Lord, all the earth:
    serve the Lord with gladness
    and come before his presence with singing.

    Know that the Lord is God:
    it is he who has made us, and we are his;
    for we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

    Enter his gates with thanksgiving;
    go into his courts with praise:
    give thanks to him and praise his name.
    For the Lord is good;
    his loving-kindness is everlasting:
    and his faithfulness endures from age to age.

    3 The Opening Prayer
    The day is now passed and the night is at hand.
    Let us pray with one heart and mind.

    Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.
    4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each
    1  Lord God to whom vengeance belongs,
       O God to whom vengeance belongs, shine out in majesty.
    2  Rise up, O Judge of the earth;
       give the arrogant their just deserts.
    3  Lord, how long shall the wicked,
       how long shall the wicked triumph?
    4  How long shall the evildoers boast
       and pour out such impudent words?
    5  They crush your people, O Lord,
       and afflict your heritage.
    6  They murder the widow and the stranger;
       the orphans they put to death.
    7  And yet they say, ‘The Lord will not see,
       neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.’
    8  Consider, most stupid of people;
       you fools, when will you understand?
    9  He that planted the ear, shall he not hear?
       He that formed the eye, shall he not see?
    10  He who corrects the nations, shall he not punish?
       He who teaches the peoples, does he lack knowledge?
    11  The Lord knows every human thought,
       that they are but a breath.
    12  Blessed are those whom you chasten, O Lord,
       whom you instruct from your law;
    13  That you may give them rest in days of adversity,
       until a pit is dug for the wicked.
    14  For the Lord will not fail his people,
       neither will he forsake his inheritance.
    15  For justice shall return to the righteous,
       and all that are true of heart shall follow it.
    16  Who will rise up for me against the wicked?
       Who will take my part against the evildoers?
    17  If the Lord had not helped me,
       my soul would soon have been put to silence.
    18  And when I said, ‘My foot has slipped’,
       your loving mercy, O Lord, upheld me.
    19  In the multitude of cares that troubled my heart,
       your comforts have refreshed my soul.
    20  Will you have anything to do with the throne of wickedness,
       which fashions evil through its law?
    21  They gather together against the life of the righteous
       and condemn the innocent to death.
    22  But the Lord has become my stronghold
       and my God the rock of my trust.
    23  He will turn against them their own wickedness
          and silence them through their own malice;
       the Lord our God will put them to silence.
    5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow
    God our Saviour, you sent Jesus into the world of sin, and delivered him up to death for us: kindle in our hearts the same love with which he loved his own to the end; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

    Ezra 10:1–17 (Listen)

    The People Confess Their Sin

    10:1 While Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, a very great assembly of men, women, and children, gathered to him out of Israel, for the people wept bitterly. And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, addressed Ezra: “We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this. Therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord1 and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God, and let it be done according to the Law. Arise, for it is your task, and we are with you; be strong and do it.” Then Ezra arose and made the leading priests and Levites and all Israel take an oath that they would do as had been said. So they took the oath.

    Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and went to the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib, where he spent the night,2 neither eating bread nor drinking water, for he was mourning over the faithlessness of the exiles. And a proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the returned exiles that they should assemble at Jerusalem, and that if anyone did not come within three days, by order of the officials and the elders all his property should be forfeited, and he himself banned from the congregation of the exiles.

    Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month. And all the people sat in the open square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the heavy rain. 10 And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have broken faith and married foreign women, and so increased the guilt of Israel. 11 Now then make confession to the LORD, the God of your fathers and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives.” 12 Then all the assembly answered with a loud voice, “It is so; we must do as you have said. 13 But the people are many, and it is a time of heavy rain; we cannot stand in the open. Nor is this a task for one day or for two, for we have greatly transgressed in this matter. 14 Let our officials stand for the whole assembly. Let all in our cities who have taken foreign wives come at appointed times, and with them the elders and judges of every city, until the fierce wrath of our God over this matter is turned away from us.” 15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supported them.

    16 Then the returned exiles did so. Ezra the priest selected men,3 heads of fathers’ houses, according to their fathers’ houses, each of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to examine the matter; 17 and by the first day of the first month they had come to the end of all the men who had married foreign women.

    Submission to the Authorities

    13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

    7 The Canticle, The Song of Christ's Glory
    Christ Jesus was in the form of God:
    but he did not cling to equality with God.
    He emptied himself, taking on the form of a servant:
    and was born in our human likeness.
    Being found in human form, he humbled himself:
    and became obedient unto death,
    even death on a cross.

    Therefore God has highly exalted him:
    and bestowed on him the name above every name,
    That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow:
    in heaven and on earth and under the earth;
    And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord:
    to the glory of God the Father.
